CSA 8 sweet corn, wallawallaonions, brccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers ,zucchininew potatoes, cabbage, lettuce

Rising out the of the ashes of the drought and heat is what we fondly like to call... Box Number Eight!  Good name, huh?  It is by far the heaviest and most exciting box of the season!!

Sweet corn is a guest in this box.  It is early sweet corn so the ears aren't so big.  It's okay, my ears aren't so big either.  But after a light five minute boiling, you will see how good they are.  Send us your corn recipes.

Walla Walla onions are also in this box.  The onions are amazing this season.  They liked getting planted in early April.  There is nothing sweeter and better than Walla Walla.  Try them raw on a sandwich.  We fried one and it made a whole panful of the sweetest and best onion.  One night we will have onion rings.  If you can't use them right now, slice them and put them in a plastic bag in the freezer for next winter.  (We also tucked in the box a few set onions from last week.)

Broccoli and cauliflower are again in this week's box.  So are cucumbers and zucchini.  I enjoy the cucumbers most on a sandwich.  We have a variety of zucchini types this year.  They yellow scalloped one is called Sunburst.  Some call it Patty Pan.  It has great flavor.  If you get the light and dark striped one, it is Portofino, an Italian zucchini.  We also have the normal green zucchini.  Family shares get a small and large zucchini.  The large zucchini makes the best zucchini bread in the world.  Lucas, from Brazil, works with us this year and has never had zucchini bread.  So he brings Diane the biggest zucchinis in the world...hint, hint...more bread, please!

New potatoes are in this week's box as well.  I hope you enjoyed the ones last week.  My favorite email was from a mom who said her kids went to bed singing about potatoes.  If you didn't go to bed doing that, then maybe you should get with the program!  Ha!

Cabbage is also in this week's box.  Nothing is better than the steamed sweet flavor of cabbage, with just a bit of butter!

Lettuce is also in this week's box.  We are nearing the end of lettuce until fall.

If you can't use the bounty of this week's box, remember the freezer is your best friend.  Broccoli, cauliflower, onions, sweet corn, cabbage and zucchini can all be put in a bag and popped in the freezer.  Check out seriouseats.com for details on quick preserving.

In spite of the heat and drought, things are looking very good.  You should see the melons.  They are planted right next to the apple orchard where there are two million bees in hives.  They are cranking out melons that will come soon to a theater near you...watermelons, cataloupe.  Sweet corn looks good coming in many stages.  The potatoes are done growing so we won't need to irrigate them anymore.  Their production is not up to last year.  Tomatoes in the field look great.  Fall squash is looking very prolific.

We are planning the fall boxes and soon will be planting the spinach and lettuce for fall.  We are also making exciting plans for next year.  Any feedback from you along the way is always welcome.

The biggest harvest event right now is cucumbers.  They are great right now.  Please come and get them before they get too big.  It is two five gallon pails per coupon.  Kohlrabi will be a harvest event in a week or so.  Those kohlrabi fans will be able to get twenty kohlrabi for a harvest event coupon.

The website is updated daily under the harvest event section.  Check that before you come.

Have a great week and enjoy box number EIGHT!!

From your very own FARM!!
