CSA Box 11 and Harvest Events

Hi CSA members!!

There are many shared highlights in today's box!!  I would put melons at the top of the list.  Our staff has had many a melon party in the field taking part in the nasty job of quality control!!  Such fun!!  In today's box, some are getting the red melon with the light green outer skin.  It has never been better so enjoy sitting in the back yard spitting seeds!!  A few are getting the striped green watermelon that is yellow inside.  Others are getting the first cantaloupe that sheds the image of tasting like cardboard!!  A few are getting the honeydew that has a light colored flesh.  The melon season is just beginning so lots of excitement ahead!!  The melon field is so loaded so watch for emails in the coming weeks of sharing in the bounty of your farm.  We love the new focus of your farm where there are no stands (except for the small self serve on the farm where the staff divides up the proceeds), no wholesaling and just our CSA... period!!

Providence sweet corn highlights the list as well.  Oh my!!  Sweet corn season has now begun officially!!  If you have corn left over from a meal, cut if off and fry it crisp and enjoy a new taste sensation.  I see more and more people at the harvest events learning to eat corn raw.  It is amazing!

Tomatoes are also a highlight.  Throw away the notion that tomatoes are bland and like cardboard!

Carrots are in this week's box.

The onion today for most members is Sterling, a white onion.  We fried one yesterday and it had the best sweet and mild onion flavor.

Green beans are back in the box along with cucumbers and zucchini.

Cabbage really wanted to get in this box but there was no room.

What a delight to see so many here this past weekend making this your farm!! You are such a wonderful group of members!! I love seeing our members cutting the flowers and snipping the basil and raccooning your way through the sweet corn. Seeing you take hold of your farm as you do helps us evolve into new ideas for next year. The harvest events are a gift from your farm so if you haven't taken advantage of them, don't despair since the box is still the core of our CSA. The harvest events are the icing on the cake. Every day the harvest event info is updated on the website under current harvest event info so always check there before coming for the latest updates.  The forecast for the fall is colder than normal.  So rather than waiting for a fall event of beans, we are starting the green bean harvest on Wednesday.  Look for directions on the webite since it won't be on the harvest event field.  The sweet corn event should be great for the bulk of this week and then might be in a lull for a bit.  We have massive patches of Providence coming so if you haven't gotten your corn yet, don't worry.

Savor the many flavors of summer from your farm!!  What happens when the minerals you need to be healthy are balanced in the soil to build the house for the biology??  The answer is in the flavor!!

From your farm!!

Hi CSA members!!

The harvest event info is always updated on the website under "Current Harvest Events".

But I wanted to let you know of the new sweet corn patch starting today.  It is the same great corn that went in the Thursday box.  You get ten dozen for one ticket.  The onion harvest event is also going on.  You get a five gallon pail for a ticket.  Kohlrabi is now a free event.  There is tons of basil for a free event as well as cut flowers, kale, pickling cucumbers and zucchini.  All details are on the website and at the sign in table on the driveway.

It is supposed to rain Sunday so there is nothing like the present.  A picnic in the magic woods is that...magic!!  The best way to get to it is to follow the signs and walk the ditch at the end of our driveway.  Just a short walk and you are in paradise!!

If you can't make it today, don't worry. Harvest events never stop at Bluebird Gardens!!

P.S.  One good way to check to see if you owe a balance to your farm is on the welcome page of the website.  You can see your balance there and make a full or partial payment by credit card.  This pertains only to those who signed up by invoice only.  Those on automatic payments will not show your balance since it will be taken out automatically.  But for those who had an unsuccessful automatic payment, that balance will show and you can pay that on the welcome page.  For those who are drop off hosts, don't do anything since we will be crediting your account for your wonderful efforts at the end of the season.  We have almost sixty grand in balances owned through invoice only.  A number of members haven't paid anything yet.  So if that applies to you, taking care of that would help your farm immensely!

See you at YOUR farm!!

Mark
