Hi CSA members!!
Here we are already at box number ten, which marks the middle of the season!! The widening color of summer rises up to greet you as you open box ten.
Welcome to new members!! At the drop off site, look for your name on the pick up list, cross it off and make sure you get the right size box. Transfer the produce into your own box or cloth bag. We are glad to have you be part of our CSA!! We want to get the nutritionally dense food of biological farming in the hands of as many people as we can!!
The deep green of green beans meets you first. We have a number of patches of green beans yet to go this season, even purple beans. Let us know how you fix your beans and we will get it on the website. The colors of green beans, sweet banana peppers, green bell peppers and dark purple beets highlight this box.
Whether you use the peppers mixed in a dip, in the middle of stir fry, or raw just as crisp as can be, they will be great. We have an awesome pepper crop to come. They loved the hot summer so we will make the most of them.
We weren't able to get our favorite Red Ace beet seed this year that you liked so much last year. But we did get another super sweet beet. We miss the smooth skin texture of Red Ace. But in any case, enjoy the sweet flavor of the beets. They are not bad even raw, kind of a surprise!! If you don't use the beets, you will have dead beets laying around the house, almost as if all the relatives were on an extended stay. So careful not to let that happen!!
Enjoy the deep read color of the tomatoes. They will pep up any salad. There are cucumbers in the box for your salad as well.
We have many kinds of zucchini this year. I like the new green striped one called Tiger Stripe. We have the long striped Italian one called Portofino and an assortment of yellow ones. Whatever color zucchini you get, there are so many ways to use it. Sliced up raw to use as the chip in a dip is great. Or cut up in a salad brings new flavor. You can't beat zucchini fried with egg, or in zucchini bread...or hot dish....
Kohlrabi is back in the box. Once you peel it, the crisp inside is so refreshing and many members are new converts to kolhrabi. This one today is extra big but still is crisp and tender. Kohlrabi can be cooked in any fashion. We like it with onions.
I hope you are enjoying the onions this year. I have more than ever. Today's onions are Ailsa Craig, another sweet onion. If you can't use it all, remember you can chop it up and freeze it in a bag. The freezer is the CSA member's best friend.
I can't forget the soft pink of the new potatoes. Enjoy the candy like flavor of our new potatoes.!
We still had some beautiful cauliflower so family shares each have a head of that. A few lucky family boxes on the Fergus route have the first cantaloupe of the season!! If you don't get one, don't be melancholy, because very soon, every box will have melons. We have melon parties in the field when some have an imperfection of some sort. What a joy to eat melons dripping in juice with soft flesh.
At the bottom of the box you will find sweet corn. We are still in the early sweet corn so the ears are still small...but good. By next week, we should be in your favorite, Providence...and then the sweet corn season officially begins!
The biggest joy and challenge of making the most of your CSA is following the disciplined eating to use it all. The Crisper Whisperer has great advice on how to use but also how to easily freeze whatever you can't use at the moment. Just google "The Crisper Whisperer: 10 secrets for making the most of your CSA" and you will get great advice. Number nine is in regards to easy freezing.
Harvest events are going on as always. Our website, under harvest events, has daily updates on harvest events. Go there for the latest updates, rather than waiting for emails. I just love how you come and make it your farm...that is the intent. Here is what is going on right now:
Events needing no ticket:
~ Beautiful basil in the first row them minute you enter the field by the harvest event sign. Please come and get all you want and store up pesto for the whole winter. We will get the recipe for making it on the website pronto. Otherwise just google pesto.
~The long cucumber like what you get in the box are next. Get all you want.
~Zucchini- Shred it and freeze it and have zucchini bread all winter.
~ Cut flowers- Get these any time you come to the farm.
~ Kale- Pick off the bottom leaves and leave the top young ones. Walk out a ways since the ones close to the path into the field have been picked a lot.
Events needing a ticket:
Onions- Starting soon. I will have a yellow flag to mark the rows. You get a five gallon bucket of onions for a harvest event ticket.
Kohlrabi- Orange flag marks the row. You get twenty for a harvest event ticket.
Pickling cucumbers- Our staff pulled off all the big ones last Friday so they can produce again. This is an event needing no coupon now. They have gone on over a month now so the end is coming.
Sweet corn- You get ten dozen for a harvest event ticket. Right now it is in front of our house. Sign in and put your ticket in at the middle of the driveway and then drive up the driveway. At the big oak trees, go straight. Park anywhere in the yard and pick away. Make sure you eat the corn right in the field as well. It is amazing raw and is the official raccoon endorsed method for eating sweet corn.
Tomatoes- Coming really soon.
No other CSA in the country does harvest events like we do. Enjoy the rare chance you have to soak up the bounty of YOUR farm! We love seeing you here. After watching you this year on your own harvest event field, which we totally love, we have great plans for next year to make it even better!! You feedback is always welcome! When you see us working in the field, always feel free to come and see what we are doing. You will never bother us and our staff would love to see you!!
With the nation-wide drought, you hear a lot about rising food prices. The harvest events help you become self-sufficient and avoid those prices. We will not raise our CSA price for next year...or the next. Don't forget to picnic in the magic woods. Park on our driveway by the mailbox and follow the signs. It is a very cool place for any age.
Thank you for being the very best!! We completely love our many CSA members!
From YOUR very own farm!
