Hi CSA members!!
It appears our mementary lull in harvest events is over!! The following harvest events are going on:
Sweet corn should go on now for the next three weeks! The patch now is at the address 26115. Go past our driveway and it is on the left. Go up the driveway and park on the farm road that goes along the wooden fence. We ask that you not drive in the ground that is tilled up but stay on the farm road by the wooden fence and east past the squash. We have tilled up the corn that we are done with and it is so soft and full of corn matter. So it is perfect for life in the soil and driving on it would hurt the life in the soil. Pick the corn rows that are between the flags. You get ten dozen for a harvest event. Sign in and place your tickets at the sign in table on our driveway. Please don't pick the winter squash. It is not ready and it is for the box.
Green beans are beautiful. As you head to the farm from Fergus, look for the orange flag on the south side of Hwy 18. Go down that approach and turn right and drive the farm road up to the blue flags. You can pick in the rows between the blue flags. It is a young patch of beautiful beans. It should last a week or two. You get two five gallon pails for a harvest event ticket. Still sign in at the sign in table on our driveway.
Tomato picking will resume on Saturday. It is on the harvest event field, maroon flag. Follow the path into the field and you will see the flag. You get two five gallon pails for a ticket. The best tomato picking should be in September, like last year.
Pickling cucumbers do not want to give up. They are at the green flag by the tomatoes. It is a free event.
Beets can be picked in the harvest event field. It is the purple flag. You get a five gallon pail for a ticket. Beets will also continue on our fields in October.
Onions can be picked at the yellow flag. They are wanting to get soft in the middle so I wouldn't wait for the end of the season. I would harvest them now and chop them up and freeze them.
Harvest events and their directions change from day to day so always check the website under current harvest events before coming. New changes are always posted on sign in table as well.
Kale, cut flowers and basil are events where you don't need a coupon. Make sure you leave the top leaves of the kale plant or it will die.
Rules for harvest events:
You are most welcome to bring friends who are not members. However it is not fair to our members if they bring home food from the farm, unless they share from your harvest event ticket. The items where you don't need a ticket are really for our members only.
If you share a membership with others and got the free harvest event coupon in the coupon mailer, one of those can be used for your membership. In other words, if there are three of you sharing a box, only one of those coupons can be used.
Our hours are morning to night, seven days a week. It is your farm, after all!!
Harvest events to come up:
The pumpkin harvest will start on Saturday, Oct 22 and continue on until they are gone.
The squash also looks amazing. We will wait til they are ripe. The flavor of winter squash improves the later into the season it gets.
Potatoes will be the first half of October.
Spinach is planned to be a great free pick into the fall.
Harvest Angels:
If you are in need of someone to harvest for you, let us know. The following have let us know and would love if someone would harvest for them.
Jenna- Is expecting and has a two year old. She would love green beans. She lives in North Fargo and her number is 701-290-0662. Give her a call if you can help her out.
Jennifer has fibromyalgia and other conditions and would love green beans, beets and broccoli. She is from South Fargo and if you can help her, call 701-541-2678.
Charlene and her husband are blind and would like broccoli, cauliflower, pickling cukes, corn, kale and basil . They are from South Fargo and please call 808-224-1896.
New for next year!!
Each year we learn from our members. In the fall we will have a survey so your farm can evolve to better meet your needs. We have noticed fun things with the harvest events this year. We love how you come and use the harvest event field so well, as if it were your background garden. That is our goal.
We have also noted how much many have enjoyed the events that need no coupon. We want to expand those items for next year. We plan a massive planting of red watermelon so you can come and have an absolute melon fest next summer. We are buying Drangen self-propelled machines for weeding so the agony of raising crops such as carrots is diminished. That will enable us to grow a huge patch of carrots and beets, weed-free, on the harvest event field that our members can harvest from any time they come to the farm.
We also plan to purchase a green bean and corn harvester. The problem with beans and peas is the massive labor it takes to put them in the box. Each delivery days of beans takes eighty five gallon pails. The machine works on peas and beans which will let us put a better amount of peas and beans in your box. It will let us have many more plantings of peas, early summer and fall in your box. But you will also have the option of not picking your harvest event beans by hand and get them already picked. Cool huh? Same with corn. I know many like the adventure of picking corn in the patch with your family. We will still give that option. But you can get your harvest event corn from a fresh-picked trailer next year if you choose.
This Friday afternoon, we will be at Diane's brother's funeral so my phone will be off. His name was Eldon Rund. He was 75 and died unexpectedly this week. He was still engaged in farming. You are still welcome to come for harvest events, though.
From your farm!!
