CSA BOX 15

Hi CSA members!!

Every box evolves.  Box number fifteen really did!!  There are many thoughts and combinations to juggle in a box.  Which is the best combination?

We have three maturity dates of bok choi and they look great.  Last week's was the earliest maturity dated one so it was smaller.  We had planned to do the next one in line for this box but realized it would be so much bigger and nicer in a week so we changed on that one for this week.  It is not in the box but still growing.  Next we shot for spinach but realized that, too, would be better in a week.

Sweet corn is definitely in the box.  We are in the best patch of the season.  Sweet corn sometimes gets a bad image on nutrition.  Some think it only has starch.  Not so fast.  Sweet corn is a great source of vitamin C, along with thiamin, niacin and magnesium.  It also has the antioxidant lutein, a carotene which promotes eye health.  When you cook sweet corn, it becomes a good dietary source of the antioxidant ferulic acid, which may help prevent cancer.

It may seem like summer, but it the weather is about to change.  According to NOAA weather, we are in a colder than normal stint starting next week.  So far the lowest ten day temperature is 41 but I am thinking frost next week is a good chance.  So we really wanted to give a burst of summer in this box of tomatoes and peppers.  So the pik a pie pumpkin we had picked and planned for this box got pushed out to make room for tomatoes and peppers.

The normal staples of onion, potatoes, zucchini and cucumber are also in the box.  Enjoy the flavors of summer.  We should have more summer in at least one more box.  Luckily the lettuce, spinach, bok choi, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower can handle cold weather so they won't be affected by a chilly spell.

If you haven't done your tomato and sweet corn harvest event and still plan to, you should do it soon.  Both tomato and sweet corn patches are unstoppable so take advantage of them while you can.  The weather will be fine for maybe another week.  All updates and directions for harvest events are on the website under current harvest events.  Always check that before you come.

We have five boxes to come after this week which will allow plenty of time to get the gorgeous squash and other fall items into the box.

Remember the fall harvest for potatoes, squash, pumpkins and beets is Oct 6 - 19.  The grand finale free pick is the weekend ofOct 20-21.  Last Saturday when so many were hauling beautiful pails of tomatoes out of the field was like a big group hug.  It was a fun day!

Sometimes I wonder about things.  Do you ever wonder about things?

Like... are people who eat Wheaties every day really cereal killers??  Scary thought!

And then there's the weathermen.  They talk about fair days being full of sun.  Does that make a cloudy day "unfair"??

And how about the CSA box offerings we make.  Could we add more to fit people's needs?  We will still keep the family share and the share as they are.  However, we are thinking we need to invest in another box shape for the share.  We spend hours each boxing session trying to fit everything into the share box this year.  We are looking for one the same shape as the family box.

We are thinking of these two additions for next year.  The first is to have the option of a family share every other week.  This would be for those who get a share but like the size of items that come in the family box, which would never squeeze into a share box.  They would still get five harvest event tickets and the cost would be 325 for the season.  The downfall of this plan is you would only get the box every other week.

The second option is for those who find too much to eat in the share box.  In this plan, they would get a share box every other week.  It would be 225 and would be considered a share for one person.

Let us know what you think of the two new options which would be added to the traditional family and share plans.

Have a great week!

From YOUR farm!

Mark
