CSA BOX 13

Hi CSA members!!

So how do you catch a rabbit??  "Unique up on it!!"

What makes box 13 different from rest??  First of all, there is no corn in this box.  The big patch did not get ready as fast as I thought.  So the sweet corn harvest event is on hold for a few days as well.  But having no corn let us do some unique things.

It let us give each member a watermelon and cantaloupe.  The striped watermelons are yellow inside.  The light green ones are red inside.  The cantaloupe are from many varieties.  All the melons we sampled were awesome.  We are hoping you have the same experience with yours.  The melon season is almost over.  So like the month of August, enjoy it while you can!

Purple beans also make this box unique.  They are purple...until you cook them.  We had some last night and they were great.  The green pick on the farm continues and now includes the purple beans.

Cabbage has been trying to find room in the box for a few weeks and now it found its chance.  I love cabbage steamed with a dab of butter but cole slaw is great as well.  If you can't use it all, just chop it up, put it in a plastic bag, remove as much air as you can and pop it in the freeze for a great soup next winter.

The normal items you use each week are in the box.  They are cucumbers, the very versatile zucchini, onions and potatoes.  Enjoy each while you can.  We are almost to September when frost can happen anytime.  So far, the extended forecast has warmed up so it looks good.

Make sure you get the right size box.  If someone gets your box for you, make sure they know.  The size box you get is behind your name on the check off list and each box is also labeled.  Overall, drop offs are running very smoothly.  I really appreciate your following directions at the harvest events.  You know where the crops are based on directions and vehicles have been staying on farm roads, and not fields, very well.  Always call me with any questions.

Last weekend, so many volunteered to be harvest angels for those who couldn't pick on their own.  What an amazing statement to the goodness of our members.

On Tuesday and Thursday especially, there are items in the packing shed available to our members.  For example, today we have many melons with cracks or spots, some onions and some cabbage that weren't good enough to go in the box.  But they are still good.  If you are in the area on those days, feel free to stop by and get what you want.  Those bins are labeled.  Many things in the packing shed are for the next box so make sure you read the signs.

Have a great week!  Exciting fall boxes and harvest events lie ahead!

From YOUR farm!!

Mark
